Even when the “Duetto” was at the concept stage, some people were convinced that the new Alfa Spider 2000 Veloce seemed old-fashioned, particularly at the rear. Before Pininfarina made the crucial change at the Turin studio, extensive studies were carried out in a wind tunnel. The results were very clear, at least in the sales figures. The changes affected not only the now striking tail with its much larger rear lights and continuous stainless steel bumper, but also the front section with a broader Alfa heart, details such as the handles being recessed in the doors and the spartan interior in the “Duetto”.
The Spider was fitted initially with the renowned 1750 engine but was soon followed by a model with the 2000 fitted. This four-cylinder engine with the famous overhead camshafts had an output of up to 131 HP and helped the lightweight Spider to achieve performance which effectively left other sports cars standing. When launched in the UK, for example, a “Duetto” cost about as much as an E-Type Jaguar, and considerably more than an Austin Healey 3000. Alfa Romeo sold the cars in Germany at prices starting from 14,750 Marks (Switzerland: 17,500 Francs); or, by way of comparison, a Baur cabriolet version of the BMW 2002 cost 14,250 Marks.
To this day, this model is still seen as one of the most successful Alfa Romeo cars ever. Its classic design makes the 2000 Veloce one of the most sought-after classic cabriolets of the 1970s. The powerful and resilient engine and rear-wheel drive provide unlimited driving pleasure.
What better way to live the Alfa Romeo myth than behind the wheel of an Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider Veloce from Nostalgic. Experience dreamy Italian settings: Amalfi Coast, the Mille Miglia or Gran Premio Nuvolari in Tuscany, Piedmont or the Lago Maggiore.
