ETNA
The highest and most active volcano in Europe is located inland between Catania and Messina. The exact height of Mount Etna cannot be determined, since it varies because of cinder cones and eruptions. Currently it is about 3323 metres. Due to the eruptions and weathered lava the densely populated area around Mount Etna has become very fruitful over the years. Because of its height, the slopes are divided into different vegetation belts. Up to about 1500 m olive, fig, pistachio, orange and lemon trees, as well as vineyards thrive. A forest zone and an area of mosses and lichens continue up to 2500 m. In higher elevations, Etna has no vegetation and its summit is covered with snow all year round. In 1987, approximately 58 000 hectares around the volcano were made into the regional park "Parco dell 'Etna”. It may seem strange but the Sicilians have come to terms with the ever-simmering danger in their immediate environment. So it is not surprising that it is the custom once a year to drive up the mountain and to eat there.
