TAORMINA
The capital of the ancient times, Taormina, is located on the east coast of Sicily on Monte Tauro; the municipality however includes several places along the seashore. A funicular ride is the quickest, easiest and stress-free way to reach the Old Town, including the remains of the ancient amphitheatre, from Mazzarò, the district on the waterfront. During this quick ride, you can enjoy the view of Castelmola and the Bay of Letojanni.
GOLE DELL'ALCANTARA
Particularly impressive and worth seeing is the valley of the river Alcantara, which springs at its source at 1250 m above sea level near the village of Floresta and then flows through the area north of Mount Etna. After 52 kilometres it flows into the Ionian Sea near Giardini-Naxos. Some 1000 years ago the river bed was blocked by a lava flow from an eruption of Etna. Due to the cold water this cooled faster than normal and the lava took particular forms. The water has made its way through the lava over the centuries and has created picturesque canyons; the “Gole Alcantara” was created in 2001 in the Parco fluviale dell’Alcantara to protect the river. It is used as a recreation area.
