GRASSE
The capital of the perfume, located in the back country of the Côte d'Azur about 20 km from the coast is today the home of about 30 perfume factories and was made famous by the adaptation of the bestseller "Perfume" by Patrick Suskind.
The city, first mentioned in 1040, has been producing perfume since medieval times. Since the 17th Century the perfumers have specialized in the extraction of nectar, especially orange blossom and jasmine. The flowers are now, however, mostly imported so the sight of fields of bright flowers has now become a rare image.
In Grasse, time seems to have stopped. Strolling through the narrow streets, through which beguiling fragrances waft, you feel transported back to bygone times. The classic perfume "Chanel No. 5" was created back in the 1920s in Grasse and is still available.
