NICE
Nice is the largest city on the coast. With its almost 400,000 inhabitants, it is often referred to as the capital – but only of the department of Alpes-Maritimes. In the year 500 BC the city was founded by the Greeks and about 150 BC it was colonized by the Romans. Still today, the Roman Amphitheatre of the town can be admired. In 1388 Nice and Menton broke away from France and belonged to an Italian county. Since 1860, both cities belong again to France. Nice quickly became the largest tourist city in southern Europe. Today the city is the biggest tourism and commercial centre on the Côte d’Azur. In addition to the advantages of a cosmopolitan city, it is also a quaint old town full of contrasts with cozy restaurants and noisy markets. Enjoy a stroll along the famous Promenade d’Anglais, past one of the finest hotels in the world, the Hotel Negresco.
CANNES
Every year in May the Cannes Film Festival turns the city into the place to be seen. The city shot to world fame in 1945 as the rendezvous place of stars. The few points of interest remain in the background. Seeing and being seen on the many promenades, strolling and shopping are more important.
