Alfa Romeo 2000 Spider (1971-1977)
The Giulietta Spider was one of the rare total stars in automobile design, and that meant even more headaches among those responsible at Alfa Romeo when it came to designing an adequate successor. In fact, public opinion was divided when in 1966 a new sports car was unveiled at the Geneva Automobilsalon.
Because of the striking design of the rear, the workers on the conveyor belt had given the car the unflattering nickname "Osso di Seppia" (squid tail). The Alfa management took an unusual step when it came to inventing a name. A competition was organized for suggestions for a suitable title, and "Duetto" finally emerged as the winner. The Spider scored its greatest success after landing a leading role in "The Graduate", with Dustin Hoffman.
A major modification to the rear section marked the launch of the new Alfa Romeo Spider, and from 1970 it rose rapidly in the eyes of the public in Europe. Its four-cylinder engine produced up to 131 h.p. and helped the lightweight Spider to achieve driving performances which effectively left other sports cars standing. To this day, this model is still seen as one of the most successful vehicles ever to come from the house of Alfa Romeo.
